The Nebraska defense is porous, and that's a bad thing when facing the high-octane Texas Tech offense.  Lay the points on the Red Raiders at home vs. the Cornhuskers.

It was noble of first-year Nebraska coach Bo Pelini to take the blame and apologize to the state for the Cornhuskers' miserable showing in a 52-17 loss to Missouri last week.  But it's not Pelini's fault. He's a good coach, better than what Nebraska has had. The problem is the Cornhuskers haven't converted to 21st century football yet.

Texas Tech Red Raiders -20½ roll vs. Nebraska Cornhuskers

Their defense isn't quick or fast enough to compete with high octane spread offenses such as Missouri and now Texas Tech. The Cornhuskers can have all the motivation and turn in a great effort, but they simply are overmatched here. Now that the point spread has gone down to less than three touchdowns, the time is right to play Texas Tech.

The Red Raiders have the nation's No. 2 offense, averaging 583.3 yards per game, and the No. 1 passing attack. They beat the Cornhuskers, 70-10, when Nebraska last visited Lubbock four years ago. Texas Tech coach Mike Leach isn't the kind of coach to let up either like Missouri actually did last week. He'll run up a score for poll purposes.

Texas Tech buried Kansas State 58-28 last week. Graham Harrell was 38-for-51 with six touchdown passes for Texas Tech. The Red Raiders received good ground support, too, from Shannon Woods and Baron Batch.

Any optimism from Nebraska's narrow loss to Virginia Tech two weeks ago faded with its surrender to Missouri. Now the Cornhuskers go on the road for the first time. They've allowed an average of 52.6 points in their last four road games. The sad fact is Nebraska can't stop Big 12 opponents. They are giving up an average of 47 points in their last eight conference games.

Free Pick: Texas Tech -20½ (-110)

Honestly, Leach could care less about polls. The reason he doesn't stop the offense from scoring is because he wants his guys (first or second string) to play as many snaps as they can in their college career. He wants to keep executing the offense, cause its the defense's job to stop them. He feels the same if it were the other team continuing to score.

Who taught Leach this lesson?
Nebraska. circa 2000. When the Huskers ran up the score 56-3 in Leach's first year.

As a Husker fan, I have to take exception to the last comment, because it seems to be a very common comment of those dominant Husker option teams. In all fairness, just because the score was lopsided does NOT mean that Nebraska ran up the score. That was not a trademark of either Osborne or Solich as coaches. Let me educate you: When they played in 2000, Nebraska was the #1 ranked team in the country and Texas Tech was unranked and 0-4.

To quote ESPN's article at http://espn.go.com/ncf/2000/20001014/recap/nndtto.html "Crouch, who was so banged up by Iowa State that he missed a practice this week, ran 12 times for 52 yards and was 6-of-12 passing for 86 more in three quarters. Replacement Jamal Lord led Nebraska to touchdowns on all three of his drives, the last capped by an 8-yard run of his own." <--note that it was the backup quarterback leading the touchdown drives in the 4th quarter.

In addition, to quote yet another source at http://sharkfeet.tripod.com/2000season3.htm "Under the direction of Crouch and his replacement Jamel Lord the big red scored on thier first five possessions of the second half. The reserves were inserted early in this one and many gained valuable game experience."

Note that it said "The reserves were inserted early in this one and many gained valuable game experience." I'm sorry, but when the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th string (see stats in the article) run over your first string, it is not "running up the score." Just what does one expect to happen when the #1 team in the country takes on a team that hasn't won a single game up to that point??? I rest my case.

As a novice watcher of NCAA football(YEAH RIGHT)! Back in the day the Huskers would roll over any and everybody. They can't play on the days of past, but play today. The Red Raiders are wanting to make a statement in Texas, and they are going to try by making an example out of the games they have left to play. Thier Defense is stron gna d thier aresonal of talent only rivals OKLA. Take the Red Raiders in this one and give the Huskers the points!
