INDIANAPOLIS (Ticker) -- The Cotton Bowl, a long-time staple of
the New Year's Day bowl lineup, will take place on January 2 in
2009, the NCAA announced on Wednesday. In another change, the game will be played in the afternoon
rather than at its recent starting time of 10 a.m. CST. The 2009 Cotton Bowl will be the last played at its current
location. The game will move to the Dallas Cowboys' new stadium
in 2010. The NCAA also announced the addition of two bowl games following
the 2009 season, one in St. Petersburg, Florida and the other
in Washington, D.C. The St. Petersburg Bowl will be played between December 20-23 at
Tropicana Field, the home of major league baseball's Tampa Bay
Rays. The game will match teams from the Big East Conference
and Conference USA. The NCAA also approved the Congressional Bowl, which will
feature Navy and a team from the Atlantic Coast Conference. No
date was announced for the game. A proposal for a bowl in Salt Lake City was rejected. Last year, there were 32 bowl games and 71 bowl-eligible teams
with at least 6-6 records.
