Thus far, the New York Mets season can be defined with two names; David Wright. Wright is burning up the National League with a .412 batting average with 4 home runs and 24 runs batted in and we're only 10 days away from June.
Manager Terry Collins was heavily criticized by David Wright and opposing Milwaukee manager Ron Roenicke as he pulled Wright from a ball game on May 15th. Mets pitcher D.J. Carrasco plunked Ryan Braun and Collins expected retaliation. What's a manager to do?
Collins abruptly took Wright out of the game and was the "heavy"; Collins was merely trying to protect his best ball player as the Mets have played beyond expectations with the departure of shortstop Jose Reyes.
Terry Collins has been a great fit for New York and the results are in the standings.Same old Bay?Injuries have played a minor role in the Mets season
thus far as players like Jason Bay, Ike Davis,Josh Thole, Ruben Tejada, and starting pitcher Mike Pelfrey have all been on the shelf for a while.
Don't expect to see Pelfrey until the 2013 season with an elbow injury and the combination of Thole and Tejada will be available to play possibly in late May. Catcher Josh Thole can't be rushed back onto the ball field especially after the tragedies that have been going on with concussions and after effects. Thole is recovering from a concussion and the Mets hope to see him soon.
As for Jason Bay, the Mets are wondering if they're ever going to get a quality year out of him. He's expected to return in late May after a rib injury that he suffered on April 24th. After last season's disaster Bay promised to return to his old form when he was a member of the Boston Red Sox
. The prospects don't look good as he has less than 5 months to accomplish his goal.Overall production
With the Citi Field walls being moved in, the Mets were expected an outburst of power. Instead, they have a total of 25 home runs on the season with Ike Davis leading the way with 5. Less attention has been put on David Wright's power numbers because he's been tearing the cover off of the ball but obviously Citi Field wasn't his problem where his lack of power was last season. He's come to the realization that he's just not a 30 home run hitter.
Lucas Duda has shown signs that he'll be a player while players like Ike Davis have taken a step backwards. A lot was expected from Davis coming into the 2012 season. He might have 5 homers but he's been unable to make good contact as he possesses a league's worst .163 batting average. The Mets need Davis to get on track. This was a guy that showed signs of being a star last season and this year the star is dimly lit.Daniel Murphy
The Mets can't say that Daniel Murphy has been a disappointment because he's made great contact all season with a .319 batting average. However, Murphy has been unable to display any form of power as he's yet to hit a home run this season. Believe it or not, this was a guy that lead the Mets in home runs a few years ago. Overall, the Mets have to be happy with Murphy's ability to get on base.Ole' Reliable
I'm taking about the great author and starting pitcher for the New York Mets, 37 year old R.A. Dickey. Dickey has been a gem ever since joining the Mets in the majors at his advanced age. We know all of the struggles that he's had to endure in his life but his knuckle ball is baffling hitters and sure making the quality of his life a lot better. Dickey is an underestimated pitcher with a 5-1 mark and a 3.75 ERA. Whenever R.A. takes the mound, the Mets can have confidence
Ace Johann Santana is finally healthy and this is the moment that the Mets have been waiting for. Santana is known for pitching light's out and rarely getting run support from the team. Nothing has changed as he sports a 1-2 record with a 2.89 ERA. Expect Santana to keep battling whether the Mets can muster up a run or two for him or not. If he get's run support, he's one of the best pitchers in baseball.Closing issues
Frank Francisco and his 11 saves have been sufficient but the Mets can live with a closer with a 7.55 ERA. This will be an ongoing issue.Outcome and Odds
With a 22-19 record through 41 games, with this lineup, the Mets have to be thrilled. This is mostly due to the leadership of Terry Collins and the onfield leadership of David Wright. The Lottery Ticket
MLB future betting odds have the Mets at +6600 to win the World Series and +2700 to win the National League.
I see absolutely no way of this happening but if you're willing to take the risk with your MLB picks
, the National League bet at +2700 is more realistic. The American League is loaded and the Mets have no chance. However, a couple of years ago, I saw a San Francisco Giants team win a World Series with one of the worst offenses in baseball. The Philadelphia Phillies aren't the same and anything can happen.
