The Timberwolves and Nets are two of the worst teams in the NBA, but neither of these teams deserves to be favored by this much and underdog Minnesota is 12-2 ATS the last 14 meetings.
Not all of the NBA matchups on Tuesday Night have playoff implications, and one such battle of also-rans sees the Minnesota Timberwolves (17-60 overall, 5-33 away) paying a visit to the New Jersey Nets (23-53 overall, 18-20 home) at the Prudential Center in Newark, NJ at 7:00 ET.Free NBA Pick:
Just the fact that this game is meaningless as far as the playoffs should be enough of a reason why neither of these teams should be giving five points or more at this time of year, especially when you consider that the Nets are two games under .500 straight up at home including losing their last for games at “The Rock”.
The NBA latest line from Bookmaker Sportsbook for this contest is Minnesota +5½, with the betting odds set at -110.
Granted, the Nets are 20-18 against the NBA odds in those home games, but most of that success has come in an underdog role, and they are getting outscored by an average of -2.9 points per game in their own building. In fact, New Jersey has been favored just 12 times this season, and while it is 5-7 against the spread in those games, four of the covers came while laying 2½ points or less, so the Nets are not accustomed to being decided favorites like this.
As if that is not bad enough, the Nets have had no answers for Minnesota in recent years, as the Timberwolves have probably had more success vs. New Jersey than they have had vs. any other NBA team. The Timberwolves have won each of the last four head-to-head meetings outright, including an easy 15-point win at Minnesota in the first meeting this season, and Minnesota is a whopping 12-2 ATS in NBA betting in the last 14 encounters.
Now we get that the Timberwolves have lost 10 consecutive games straight up, but all but one of those 10 losses came to teams with better records than New Jersey, and the one exception was the Sacramento Kings, who have actually been playing very inspired basketball lately. Meanwhile, the Nets have lost 10 of their last 11 games straight up themselves, with the only win coming in overtime at home vs. a Cleveland team with the worst record in the NBA.
We also get that the T-Wolves are playing without their stud Kevin Love right now, but the Nets are decimated by injuries also, most notably starting guard and Deron Williams and key sixth man Anthony Morrow, who are both listed as questionable for this game but would be hindered a bit even if they did play.
Also, Kris Humphries is already confirmed out, and he is the Nets’ leading rebounder. Thus, that should help offset Love being out for Minnesota. The Nets got crushed on the boards without Humphries in their 108-94 home loss to the Miami Heat in their last game Sunday, getting out-rebounded 50-30.
Now we get that this is a meeting between two of the worst teams in the NBA right now, but in these situations, the underdogs almost always hold the line value on the NBA betting odds, as the favorites simply cannot be trusted giving points. This game looks like no exception.
Timberwolves +5½ (-110)
