The Connecticut Huskies and Detroit Titans are expected to play two different brands of basketball this year, as the two teams prepare to face off Thursday night. Let's check the betting odds.

Let’s take a closer look at the college basketball betting odds for this non-conference matchup at Gampel Pavilion, with the opening tip scheduled for 7:00 p.m. ET on ESPN3.

Secure the boards

Image previewDetroit’s only chance of staying within this number is pounding the glass, as it averages 51.5 rebounds per game, including 22.5 on the offensive end—both marks are the best among Horizon League programs.

The Titans have split their first two games of the 2013-14 campaign, as they come off a 106-51 blowout victory over UM Dearborn Monday.

Shooting the lights out

Connecticut has won its first two games by shooting 21 of 40 from beyond the arc, which ranks among the Top 10 nationally in that category in the early going, as it picked up an 80-62 victory over the Yale Bulldogs as 16-point home favorites last time out.

The Huskies are 7-0 SU and 3-3-1 ATS as home favorites of 12.5 or more points the last two-plus seasons.

Bad situation

College basketball handicappers are going to have a hard time backing the Titans, as they’ve lost 21-straight games versus ranked opponents, with their last such win coming on Jan. 10, 2002.

Junior forward Juwan Howard Jr. will need to have a monster game inside—coming in averaging 20.0 points and 10.5 rebounds per game.

Detroit is 0-3 SU and 3-0 ATS as a road underdog of 12.5 or more points since the 2011-12 campaign.

Perfection

The Huskies are being led by senior point guard Shabazz Napier on both ends of the floor, as he’s averaging 16.0 points and 9.0 rebounds.

Connecticut has won all 24 of its opening games at this particular venue, while it has received 31 and 30 points from its bench in the first two games of the season.  That particular group didn’t score more than 25 in any contest last year.

Prediction

I’m going to recommend that readers back the Titans for their NCAA basketball picks, as the Huskies are 6-12 ATS versus non-conference opponents the last two-plus seasons.

Connecticut will have limited second-chance opportunities due to its inability to rebound in the early going this year.
