We’ve been leaning on the favorites in some early lopsided NCAA Basketball matchups. See who we like today as we pick apart some games on this NFL Sunday.

Robert Morris (2-1) at #1Kentucky (2-1)

Due For a Beating?

Kentucky might be a team of mostly freshman, but senior Jon Hood hasn’t forgotten about the stunning 69-67 defeat that an underachieving 2012-2013 Wildcats team suffered at the hands of the Colonials in the NIT. Look for Kentucky to use that game as motivation in a game that they’re a 21 point betting favorite in; we could see a blowout out today at Rupp Arena.

Image previewThe Wildcats are also coming off of another loss, but it’s this season as they were taken down by the #2 Michigan State Spartans, 78-74. Coach Calipari said that the players were taking this loss very hard and this is expected as most of the team is inexperienced on the collegiate level and it’s a good learning experience as they move on.

Look for another dominant performance out of forward Julius Randle as he might be the next Anthony Davis. Randle has dominated action thus far, averaging 24 points and 14 rebounds per game while shooting 63.6% from the field. Randle passed the test against a tough Michigan State team as he led the Wildcats with 27 points and 13 rebounds. One weakness in his game is the turnovers, but he’s been flat-out dominant.

Robert Morris is led by the experienced duo of leading scorers Karvel Anderson and Lucky Jones. Jones is coming of a solid 18 point, 8 rebound performance in a loss to Eastern Michigan. The Colonials are a team that can score, but can they deal with one of the most talented teams in the nation is the question?

Oakland (0-3) at #15 Gonzaga (2-0)

The Impossible Task

The Golden Grizzlies come into McCarthey Athletic Center with the seemingly impossible task of knocking off one of the top teams in the nation in the Gonzaga Bulldogs. To make things worse, they will be without key contributors Duke Mondy and Dante Williams due to the suspension of both players on suspicion of sexual assault. The one thing that Oakland can say is that they played some top 25 teams in North Carolina and UCLA, but the bottom line is they lost both games by 30 points or more and that’s when they were at full strength.

Home Cooking

The Bulldogs have won 29 consecutive home games against unranked opponents and thus far have been an offensive machine, averaging 96.5 points per game while shooting 55.6% from the field. Granted, the opposition wasn’t the toughest, but Oakland shouldn’t be a more difficult opponent than the first two teams that Gonzaga has faced. Gonzaga’s top 3 leading scorers in Gary Bell Jr., Gerard Coleman, and Sam Dower are all shooting an eye-popping 66.7% from the field or higher.  Bell Jr. shot the lights out against Colorado State, going 8 of 13 from 3-point land alone. With senior center Sam Dower (14 ppg., 13 rpg.) defending the glass, Gonzaga should be able to blowout a short-handed Golden Grizzlies squad.
