Wichita State vs. Illinois State
Tonight a battle of MVC
foes takes place in the central plains of Illinois, as the Shockers of Wichita
State head into Normal to face the Redbirds of Illinois State.
The NCAAB Odds for this one favor the home Redbirds by -2, with a larger total
of 136 points. Which side of these lines should we back with our picks for
Sunday?
Shockers
The
Shockers need this win to stay atop the MVC standings heading into the end of
the regular season, as Creighton is right on their heels. Heading into Normal
won’t be easy. The Shockers are only 4-6 ATS on the road this season, but they
have beaten the Redbirds in Normal their last two trips there.
Even
though Wichita State has won two in a row, they are still trying to heal from
their three straight conference losses both SU and ATS. Two straight wins
against bottom feeders in the MVC helps a lot, but it casts serious doubt on
the Shockers. Creighton has them in their sites.
Illinois State
The
Redbirds have been a nice surprise for basketball fans in Illinois this season.
They are a Top 25 team in scoring as well as assists. They also rank in the top
50 in field goal percentage.
After
starting off their conference season awfully, losing six straight, the Redbirds
have been on a tear since. Illinois State has won seven of their last eight and
four in a row SU. They have also covered in four straight games, including a
huge road win at #16 Creighton just a little more than a week to go.
A big reason the Redbirds are cruising has been the play of Jackie Carmichael.
The senior from Manhattan, KS is having a stellar final season in Normal, averaging
over 18 points per game and grabbing well over 9 rebounds per contest.
However,
Carmichael is in for a big test tonight, with Wichita State’s Cleanthony Early
coming to town. Early, a junior, is leading the Shockers in scoring as well,
and while probably won’t be guarding one another all evening, these two studs
will be at it all night for their respective squads, and will be the main
reason one of these teams leave Normal with a win.
The Sharp Pick
Wichita
State has covered in six of their last eight meetings against the Redbirds and
they won seven of eight in that stretch. However tonight, with plenty of
conference implications for this game, I’m laying off the very low spread, and
focusing more on the total, which I see the most value in.
At 136,
I really like the over in this one. The total has gone over in four of Wichita
State’s last six road games, and even though the under has cashed four straight
with these two, I still like the over. Both teams score the ball extremely
well, and both like to get up and down the floor. At 136, I think both teams
being over 70 points tonight is probable, and that’s why I’m adding the over to
my NCAAB Picks.
