Does
anyone else miss football as much as I do? With the season still just under two
months away, we here at SBR Forum would like to give you some early picks for
Week 1 of the NFL season. Although these are official picks, I can’t guarantee
they will stay the same by the time September rolls around. However, given the current odds, these NFL picks are worth jumping on early while the lines are holding great value.
Dallas Cowboys vs. New York
Giants
The
first official game of the season will feature the defending champion NY Giants
as they battle the Dallas Cowboys. The Giants have opened as -3 favorites, but
after losing so much during the offseason, Eli Manning will have to play as if
it is another Super Bowl game. At this point, I think the Cowboys will be looking
to make a statement early, and even though they are on the road, I think the
Boys from Big D will win it.
My Pick: Cowboys +3
Indianapolis Colts vs. Chicago
Bears
The
Bears have been one of the big spenders this offseason, and they get a nice
warm up game for their aging defense when they host the Colts. Indianapolis
will be better this season, but a first game of a rookie’s career against one
of the NFL’s best defenses and a very good offense does not spell good news for
Andrew Luck and the Colts.
My Pick: Bears -9 ½
Philadelphia Eagles vs. Cleveland
Browns
The
Eagles will be another team looking to make a statement early and often, and
even though the Browns are hosting this game, I don’t think they have enough
defense to beat the Eagles.
My Pick: Eagles -7 ½
Buffalo Bills vs. New York Jets
This one
could end up being one of the better games of the Week 1 schedule. We all saw
the hot start that the Bills managed to pull off last season, and we all know
that the Jets can either show up to play, or just come out in pitiful form. So
the question is, which side how will these teams will show up? At this point, I
have to give the nod to the home team with the best defense.
My Pick: Jets -3 ½
Washington Redskins vs. New
Orleans Saints
No
matter what drama that has surrounded the Saints this offseason, they will
still be one of the toughest teams in the NFL. That being said, the Redskins
will also be much improved. Even though RGIII will be an amazing NFL talent,
the Skins don’t stand a chance in this game. If it was in Washington, the
spread would be much less, but this will be an easy win for New Orleans.
My Pick: Saints -9 ½
New England Patriots vs.
Tennessee Titans
The Pats
are the Super Bowl odds favorites going into this season, and there is
absolutely no doubt in my mind that they should be. They have been adding more
talent and improving their defense all off season long. They still have Tom Brady,
and no team will be better suited to win a road game in Week 1 than New
England. I would lay 8 or 9 points with them; so 6 ½ is a bargain.
My Pick: Patriots -6 ½
Jacksonville Jaguars vs.
Minnesota Vikings
If this
game isn’t blacked out, I will be surprised. This is the least desirable game
on the Week 1 schedule, and even though I have been beating up on the Jags and
how bad they will be this season, I like the taking points as long as MJD is on
the field. Adrian Peterson will not be playing, so the Vikings will have zero offense. I
like the under as well.
My Pick: Jaguars +4 ½ & UNDER 38
Miami Dolphins vs. Houston Texans
This one
is easy. I love the Texans. They will roll in this one. Enough said.
My Pick: Texans -7
St. Louis Rams vs. Detroit Lions
This
game might be better than some expect, but on the road, I don’t see the Rams
putting up a full game worth of fight. The Lions’ defense will be all over the
injury prone Sam Bradford, and the Lions’ offense will be all over an average
St. Louis defense. I like the home team laying points again.
My Pick: Lions -9
Atlanta Falcons vs. Kansas City
Chiefs
This one
will be another great game, as the spread is almost dead even. The Chiefs
should have their full lineup back and healthy, most importantly Jamaal
Charles. With that being said, I like the over in this one. These two teams are
good offensively, and average defensively. The total is very low and I like
this game to be a high scoring one.
My Pick: OVER 41
San Francisco 49ers vs. Green Bay
Packers
This one
could be the game of the week and a potential NFC Championship game. Two great
teams square off against one another and both will be trying to make a
statement. The only reason I like the Packers here is because they are at home.
The 49ers have a lot of new parts, and I think it will take a few weeks to get
it going.
My Pick: Packers -6 ½
Carolina Panthers vs. Tampa Bay
Bucs
One of
the other less than desirable games of the week 1 schedule is the late game
between the Panthers and the Bucs. Even though they are on the road, the
Panthers’ offense will be pretty good this season, so I feel comfortable at
this point laying points with the road team. Go Cam!
My Pick: Panthers -2 ½
Seattle Seahawks vs. Arizona
Cardinals
This is
one of the only divisional games in Week 1, and it might be a better game than
most fans expect. Both of these teams should be improved from last season, and even
though both are dealing with a quarterback controversy, I’m leaning with the
team with the best defense and the best coach.
My Pick: Seahawks ML
Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Denver
Broncos
Oh yes!
This one should be a monster of a game. The return of Peyton Manning to
national television and he has to face a Steelers team who will be trying to
lay him out all game. Manning’s first football in over a year, he will be
seeing blitz after blitz after blitz. However, no one in the league is better
suited to handle that blitz than Peyton.
My Pick: Broncos -1 ½
Cincinnati Bengals vs. Baltimore
Ravens
Another
divisional game will be the first of the Monday night Football double header,
and this one should be a great one. Both of these teams have great defenses,
and both were playoff teams last season. However, I think the sophomore slump
will hit the Bengals in this game, and the Ravens will be looking to hit someone
after their disappointing loss in the playoffs last season.
My Pick: Ravens -6
San Diego Chargers vs. Oakland
Raiders
Week 1
will end with another Monday night divisional battle, and it might be worth
staying up to watch. Both teams will be battling for the AFC West title, and at
this point in the season, I think Phillip Rivers will not lose this game, even
though the Chargers are known for starting slow.
My Pick: Chargers ML
