NFL Betting: AFC South Preseason Review

Is the face of the AFC South changing? For the better part of a decade, this was merely the world of the Indianapolis Colts with the Texans, Titans and Jaguars inhabited.

However, after a preseason of question for the defending AFC champs, this could become a far more interesting division that anyone would like to admit and could hold the surprise NFL betting options.

Icky Indianapolis Colts Have Winless Preseason

AFC SouthIt's not that the Colts went 0-4 in the preseason that scares us. After all, that's nothing new, and has pretty much been old hat ever since Tony Dungy became the head coach. It's how the Colts went 0-4 in the preseason that we find terrifying for head coach Jim Caldwell.

Indianapolis was absolutely atrocious in a 59-24 loss to the Green Bay Packers during the third preseason game, a game in which QB Peyton Manning and the rest of the starters played through the first half. The team allowed exactly 40.0 points per game in four exhibitions and looked putrid at times on offense, even with No. 18 calling the shots.

However, we still tend to believe that after yet another 4,000+ yard season, Manning and the Indianapolis offense is going to figure out how to outscore teams, if nothing else. There is still a question about the health of RB Joseph Addai (concussion) and TE Dallas Clark (leg) for the start of the season.

Indianapolis remains a minus 200 favorite to take down this division.

Houston (Texans), We Have a (Injury) Problem

Last season, the playoffs were in reach all season for the Texans, yet head coach Gary Kubiak still switched out a running back he was incredibly frustrated with (Steve Slaton) for an incredibly unproven commodity (Arian Foster). It worked like a charm, as Foster had a pair of fantastic games. He proved himself worth in the preseason and will be starting this year as well, but this isn't what Kubiak envisioned after the team drafted RB Ben Tate out of Auburn.

Tate is one of a number of Texans that are facing injury concerns heading into the year. Tate, Trindon Holiday, and Justin Griffith are all out for the season already. Owen Daniels, a prospective Pro Bowl tight end in the AFC, might not be ready to go following his knee surgery from last year that he is still trying to finish rehabbing.

Houston added some insurance at the quarterback position on Monday by picking up Arizona Cardinals castoff Matt Leinart to be Matt Schaub's backup.

The Texans will get their chance in Week 1 to bounce the behemoths of the South, and if they do, they won't be plus 350 underdogs anymore as they are right now at BoDog Sportsbook.

Young Ready to Lead Tennessee Titans

It's VY's ball now. Last season, QB Vince Young started on the bench for the Titans, while Kerry Collins led the team to a horrifying start to the year. After leading his team to a remarkable 8-2 finish to the season, Young knows that he is the man and is looking forward to that opportunity. He completed 68.6 percent of his passes in the preseason for 278 yards.

A year after rushing for over 2,000 yards, RB Chris Johnson is ready to go once again. However, he doesn't have the greatest preseason in the world to work off of. The former East Carolina Pirate only rushed for 39 yards on 19 carries in limited action.

The Titans could still contend for the postseason this year, but at plus 450 at BoDog, it is unlikely that they challenge for the AFC South title.

Trouble Brewing for the Jacksonville Jaguars

Jacksonville knows that it has a long climb this year to reach the mountain top of the AFC South and to get back to the playoffs. The problem is that the team has yet to really find a rushing game. Running for a total of 267 yards in four exhibitions just isn't going to cut it, and unless RB Maurice Jones-Drew has a little something up his sleeve that we haven't seen yet, the Jags are in a boatload of trouble.

The quarterback situation could be up in the air in Jacksonville very soon as well, as David Garrard (35/49, 325 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT) was clearly outperformed by Luke McCown (39/64, 511 yards, 5 TDs, 2 INTs) in the preseason.

Head coach Jack Del Rio is in trouble and the Jags know it. They need to overcome the improbable NFL odds and make a mockery out of the fact that they are plus 1200 long shots in the AFC South.
