Certain players in the NFL are well situated and some players are available for the taking. There's a certain need for some NFL teams at key positions due to ineffectiveness, trades, upgrades, and age. Let's take a look at who might be available and who could fill the voids for some NFL teams in the upcoming 2011-2012 season.
Cincinnati Bengals
The Cincinnati Bengals were simply awful in 2010 with a 4-12 record. They can certainly
use a lot of key position players. Quarterback Carson Palmer doesn't want to
play for the Bengals anymore and has mentioned retirement. I think that he made
an extreme statement and can fill the void for some other teams in need.
Second
round pick Andy Dalton shouldn't be ready to take over the franchise. The
Bengals could use a free agent quarterback or make a trade. There's lots of
quarterbacks available to choose from. Kevin Kolb of Philadephia could start
for any team. He threw for 1197 yards with 7 touchdowns and 7 interceptions
last season in 8 games.
Due to the emergence of Tim Tebow in Denver, Kyle Orton
would be a major feather in the Bengals cap if they can give up some draft
picks. Orton threw for 3653 yards with 20 touchdowns and 9 interceptions. He
would definitely be worth going after for the right price.
A few other players that
can be thrown into the mix are David Garrard, Donovan McNabb (Washington
regrets getting him), Jake Delhomme, and possibly Matt Hasselback. Hasselback
was a proven winner for the Seahawks and can gradually groom Andy Dalton into
the QB position. The Bengals also have Chad Ochocinco to offer teams. They
still have an opportunity to unleash him while he still has a decent value.
New York Jets
While the New York Jets are in a much different position than Cincinnati, they can still
use a key piece to the puzzle that will get them out of the AFC Championship
Game. Braylon Edwards and Santonio Holmes are great receivers but there's a few
receivers out there that are future hall of famers and can possibly make a
great addition to the team.
Randy Moss wants to be a Patriot but that's not
going to happen, so the next best thing for him would be to join the Jets and
stick it to the Patriots. The man still has talent, but he just needs motivation.
Terrell Owens still has some gas left in the tank, but he's not getting any
younger. This could be a good fit with a coach like Rex Ryan to make Owens feel
welcome.
Lastly, Plaxico Burress was last seen catching a touchdown pass from
Eli Manning in beating the undefeated New England Patriots in 2008. Plax is
back and I'm sure he's greatful and motivated at the same time. He would make a
great addition to the Jets. He's turning 34 but doesn't have the mileage on him
as some others his age due to incarceration. He should be in great shape.
New York Giants
Plaxico Burress again would be a great fit for the Giants. The New York Giants
organization had no ill-will towards Plaxico and always wished him the best
under adverse circumstances. The Giants and Eli Manning haven't been the same
since Burress was gone. He was Eli's favorite receiver and was partially
responsible for delivering a championship to the Giants.
Eli Manning once said
that Plaxico was a great teammate and he was shocked with how meticulous that
Burress was with his playbook. This would be a great return. The Bengals could
also use a wide receiver (some new blood). Roy Williams seems to have a tough
time co-existing with Dez Bryant in Dallas. He could be a good acquisition for
Cincinnati or the Giants.
Philadelphia Eagles
The Philadelphia Eagles look fine the way that they are but Michael Vick had expressed an interest
in mentoring Plaxico Burress post-jail. Burress could be a good fit for Philly
also.
Miami Dolphins
The Dolphins are similar to the Bengals. Chad Henne threw for 3301 yards but is
definitely not the answer at quarterback. Kevin Kolb would be a major upgrade
and the Dolphins do have players to trade for Kyle Orton. Any of the other
quarterbacks that I mentioned except for Matt Hasselback would be an upgrade
for Miami. If Vince Young could possibly grow up, Miami could be a good fit for
him and the "Fins".
If Carson Palmer got some cooperation, he could
possibly turn this team around. Miami could use a second receiver to
Brandon Marshall. Aside from Marshall, Davone Bess led the team with 5 TD's.
Roy Williams is a quality receiver that would be a good fit here. The Dolphins
don't want someone too old because they're not immediate contenders but Chad
Ochocinco could find a second life with Miami.
Finally, the Dolphins have two
capable backs in Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams. The problem is, at this
point, neither is a pure runner. Williams is getting up there in age and Brown
is injury prone. A big bruising back like Brandon Jacobs of the New York Giants
makes perfect sense here. If the Dolphins wanted to have the same running style
then possibly disgruntled Saints running back Reggie Bush could be an option.
Oakland Raiders
The Raiders finally have a running back that they can count on in Darren
McFadden. They have a serviceable quarterback in Jason Campbell but really need
to upgrade the QB position. They're also in great need at the receiver
position. I'm astonished at how tight end Zach Miller led the team in yards
last season with 685 yards and 5 touchdowns.
The Raiders didn't address their
needs at wide receiver in the draft until late. This is a team that's known for
being the bad boys of football. There's plenty of temporary "bad
boys" to fill the receiver void until they make a trade or draft next
season. Oakland didn't work out for Randy Moss. If age wasn't a factor, Terrell
Owens would be a good fit for Oakland. I'm leaning more towards the receivers
that I mentioned earlier, Chad Ochocinco and Roy Williams. Both would be a nice
addition to an improved Raider team.
Again, Kevin Kolb is an upgrade from Jason
Campbell. David Garrard might have the size of bust Damarcus Russell but he's
actually has ability. If Oakland could offer Denver some draft picks, Kyle
Orton would be a good option at QB for the Raiders. I'm not counting on Chad
Pennington to make a full recovery from another injury but if he ever did, he
would be a great QB for Oakland due to his intelligence. If Carson Palmer could
possibly warm up to the idea of a return to California, the Raiders could be a
good fit.
New England Patriots and Indianapolis Colts
Both of these teams are in similar positions. They've established themselves as
the best two teams in the NFL over the last decade but they're getting older.
Except for Reggie Wayne and Wes Welker, neither team has a legitimate go to
receiver. Brady and Manning make the receivers better than they actually are.
Both teams would be looking to go young. Stockpiling on draft picks is an
option. I actually think that Randy Moss is a great fit for the New England Patriots but the
team feels otherwise. He loves Tom Brady and Bill Belichick. If they could mend
fences, it would be a great return.
Any of the veteran receivers that I
mentioned would be a good fit except for Terrell Owens because these teams need
to win now. Owens wouldn't be able to co-exist with Manning and I'm not certain
how he would fit in the Patriots organization.
Reggie Bush could be a possible
fit for the Indianapolis Colts. He's a poor man's Marshall Faulk. Maybe some of Peyton
Manning could rub off on Bush and he could live up to his previous hype. I
expect Bush to have a chip on his shoulder. USC's national championship and
Bush's Heisman Trophy were both taken away due to rule violations.
Let's not forget, Peyton Manning is getting older. Looking for a possible
replacement could be an idea. Kevin Kolb might be willing to sit on the sidelines
if he knew that the starting position was his. Otherwise, the Colts will have
to look towards the draft. For the Patriots, they drafted Ryan Mallett in the
3rd round. They have that position covered. Getting Mallett in the 3rd round
was a steal. Bill Belichick is a genius.
Future of the NFL
With the NFL Lockout still looming over the league, it remains difficult to get a clear picture of how teams will shape up before the season begins (when ever that may be). NFL betting odds list both the Green Bay Packers and the New England Patriots as 7/1 to win Super Bowl XLVI, but with the loss of Randy Moss, will New England remain a contender?
Be sure to follow these teams, and any adjustments they make to their rosters, as this can help you gain an advantage over the NFL odds makers in Futures betting.
