Penguins hit the skids while Hawks flying high

This week’s edition of the NHL review takes bettors to one place where the public is always focused -- the Pittsburgh Penguins. With wunderkind Sidney Crosby leading the way, the Pens were supposed to be a force in the East this season, but 18 skates into the 2007-08 campaign, they have just seven wins to show for their effort.

Blue Jackets pleasing backers with lots of green

The first month of the NHL season is in the rearview mirror, and the Columbus Blue Jackets have proven to be the best investment at the wager window so far with a profit of nearly 11 units to date.  Goalie Pascal Leclaire has tossed five shutouts to lead a defense that is also paying off on the Under.

Canadiens' dollar a solid investment, so far

Currency traders have watched the Canadian dollar surpass the US dollar recently.  Montreal backers have also enjoyed an uptick at the window as the Canadiens are cashing in so far this young NHL season.  Will the trend continue in the black, or will the Habs become a losing proposition in every denomination?

Thrashers fire Hartley; Rangers search for consistency

It didn't take long for the NHL coaching ranks to suffer its first casualty as the Atlanta Thrashers, off a SE Division title a year ago, dumped Bob Hartley after a 1-7-0 start.  Meanwhile in the Big Apple, the New York Rangers are searching for offensive consistency to complement their star winger Jaromir Jagr.

Philadelphia Flyers back as bully brigade

The NHL is barely two weeks into the 2007-08 regular season and a pair of heavy suspensions -- both involving Philadelphia Flyers skaters -- have already been imposed.  Can commissioner Gary Bettman and the league find some deterrent to the cheap shots before someone is seriously hurt?

Rangers, Senators highlight first Saturday of NHL action

It's still very early in the season, and Pittsburgh is certainly going to have a say in the Eastern Conference of the NHL before it's over.  But Saturday night's Rangers, Senators matchup in Ottawa could very easily be a playoff preview and spark the crowd at Scotiabank Place into a playoff fervor.

Frozen Potpourri: NHL Training Camps, Betting Windows Open

The only thing frozen on the minds of most sports fans and bettors right now is the soon-to-be frozen tundra of Lambeau Field with the advent of the football action.  Believe it or not, however, hockey is just on the horizon with NHL training camps getting underway. And that means now is the time to hunt for soft lines at the window.

The Cup and the cap

Parity is what a salary cap is supposed to bring to any professional sports league.  But while the ice has been leveled in the NHL with their cap, there are still inequities in the front offices as a salary cap doesn't guarantee intelligence when it comes time to dole out the contracts.  The Capitals, Avalanche and Penguins seem to get it.

Stanley Cup futures update

No National Hockey League team has won back-to-back Stanley Cup championships since the Detroit Red Wings turned the trick in the 1996/97 and 1997/98 seasons. So can the Anaheim Ducks buck that trend and hoist their second straight Cup next spring?  Or will the Senators, Penguins or Sabres spoil Anaheim's defense of the Cup?

American invasion on the ice

For the first time in the history of the National Hockey League's draft, two American players were selected with the first two picks as Patrick Kane and James Van Riemsdyk were snagged by the Chicago Blackhawks and Philadelphia Flyers respectively. But can either of the young skaters help their new clubs immediately?

2006-07 NHL Betting Review

They may be just the plain old Ducks now, but Anaheim sure was mighty in taking the team's first Stanley Cup in five games against the Senators, winning Game 5 going away by a 6-2 count.  Ottawa's consolation?  They were the regular season champs as far as making money for the bettors.  Who were the other winners (and losers) at the window?

Pronger out as Senators surge

Ottawa's 5-3 win in Game 3 at home on Saturday staved off the possibility of an Anaheim sweep in the Stanley Cup finals.  And the suspension of Ducks defenseman Chris Pronger should help the Senators in Game 4 on Monday.  But the Sens will still need for their front line to step up the rest of the way if they are going to bring the Cup back home to Canada.

Cup Betting: Ducks dominating Sens

Anaheim outskated, outshot and outhit Ottawa in the first two games of the Stanley Cup Finals.  Though both games have been one-goal decisions in the end, the Ducks beat the Senators thoroughly in each game.  Now the series shifts back to Ottawa where the Sens hope a little home cooking does them well.

Stanley Cup Betting: Senators vs. Ducks

The NHL Finals finally get underway Monday night in Anaheim at the Honda Center as the Ducks host the Ottawa Senators.  Like every other sport, the media dictate the timing of the games.  And like every other sport, there's money to be made at the window.  Anaheim opens as slight series favorites over Ottawa.

Ducks, Senators set for Stanley Cup

The NHL is down to two teams as Anaheim will battle Ottawa for the Stanley Cup.  But while the matchup pits two solid and deserving squads, the first two games in Anaheim won't be seen on network TV in the US. Maybe that's a good thing since NBC might have broken away from coverage to show a Friends Reunion special.

Ottawa and ???

The Ottawa Senators ended the Buffalo Sabres’ season on Saturday afternoon, and now they will have a week off before the Stanley Cup final begins. The Sens are waiting to find out who they’ll be facing in the final, with Anaheim and Detroit still fighting to be the Western Conference’s representative.   Their series resumes on Tuesday with the Ducks a win away.

Favored Sabres try to survive

Ottawa rocketed to an early 3-0 lead in the Eastern Conference Finals versus Buffalo, including taking the first two on the Sabres' home ice.  But the Sabres kept their hopes alive with a 3-2 win on Wednesday, thanks in large part to some nice work between the pipes by Ryan Miller in the final period.  Can the Sabres force the series back to Buffalo?

Sabres slight favorites over Sens

Though it's not played up in the media as other rivalries in sports, the matchup in the NHL's Eastern Conference Finals is a big one between a couple of teams that don't like each other. The Senators and Sabres crank their series up at Buffalo's HSBC Arena tonight in what is expected to be a hard-fought match.

Sharks nearly extinct

The Buffalo Sabres and Ottawa Senators are set for the Eastern Conference Finals.  Now Anaheim awaits the winner of the Detroit-San Jose series to set the Western Conference matchup.  The Red Wings own the advantage now at 3-2 and can wrap it up tonight out west at the Shark's HP Pavilion.  Can Kirk Maltby, Dominik Hasek and the Wings close it out?

Zebras on parade

What would any playoffs be without controversy on the officiating front?  This year's Postseason On Ice has certainly had its share, from missed calls to phantom calls, to goals being waved off after review.  With the Anaheim Ducks in the Western Finals, will great hockey or questionable calls determine the remaining three to advance?

Devils, Wings hit the road for Game 3

The second round of the NHL's second season keeps skating along on Monday with a pair of Game 3's on tap.  New Jersey will be in Ottawa for a 7:00 p.m. (ET) drop and Detroit heads west to San Jose for a 10:00 p.m. start.  Both the Devils-Senators and Red Wings-Sharks series are tied at a game apiece.

Round 2 underway

The second round of the NHL playoffs got underway last night with Anaheim and Buffalo scoring victories in their series versus the Rangers and Canucks respectively.  Two more series get going on Thursday when the New Jersey Devils host the Ottawa Senators and Detroit Red Wings entertain the San Jose Sharks.

Game 7 Showdown

The first Game 7 of the NHL playoffs goes off tonight as the Canucks and Stars have stretched their opening round series to the limit.  Goals have been at a premium all series as netminders Roberto Luongo of Vancouver and Marty Turco of Dallas have been superb between the pipes. The first goal scored might be the only one in this series finale.

On the brink

With the NHL's second season only a week old, one playoff series has already been decided as the New York Rangers made quick work of the Atlanta Thrashers in a 4-game sweep.  Three more series go into Thursday night with teams holding 3-1 leads with Ottawa, Vancouver and Anaheim just a game away from dispatching a trio of fine clubs from the postseason.

Monday mayhem on ice

Three pivotal games highlight Monday night’s Stanley Cup schedule as teams look to get a leg up by taking a 2-1 lead in their respective first-round playoff series.  New Jersey travels to Tampa in one matchup, Nashville heads west to San Jose in another, and the Islanders host #1 seed Buffalo in New York. Here’s a preview of the Patriot Day action on ice.

Lord Stanley's suitors

The NHL playoffs got underway Thursday headlined by Roberto Luongo's 72 saves in Vancouver's 5-4 OT win over Dallas and San Jose's 5-4 shootout triumph against Nashville.  Four more series get going on Thursday, including the Islanders at the heavily favored Sabres and the Thrashers making their first ever playoff appearance against the Rangers.

A first round frenzy

The NHL season went down to the wire before playoff seeds were determined.  The Islanders pushed their way into the mix on Sunday, pushing the Maple Leafs out of the action.  The Hurricanes are also out and will not have a chance to defend their Stanley Cup title from a year.  Time to lace up your playoff skates and strap in for the second season on the ice.

The Devils made him do it

Seven seasons ago Devils GM Lou Lamoriello fired coach Robbie Ftorek near the end of the season though they had a 41-20-8-5 record at the time.  New Jersey went on to win The Cup, and Lamoriello appears to be trying the same strategy this year after releasing Claude Julien from behind the bench this week with the Devils out front of the Atlantic Division.

Down the Stretch

The NHL stretch run is upon us, and teams jockeying for the final playoff spots have all of the motivation at this time of year. Thus, clubs that would rather be competing for the Stanley cup in April instead of spending time on the golf course usually rise to the occasion.

Stanley Cup Futures

Just two weeks and change remain in the National Hockey League's regular season, and teams are lining up in hopes of bringing Lord Stanley's hardware back to their fans.  While the Carolina Hurricanes hope to repeat their title from a year ago, others like Buffalo, Anaheim, Ottawa and Nashville are hoping to put a crimp in those plans and take The Cup away.

Hockey takes its toll

The season is long and the players have become increasingly bigger, faster and more physical on the ice.  And that combination of factors leads to more and more injuries in the NHL.  And for some teams, the injuries are truly playing havoc on their playoff hopes.  Among those trying to get healthy are Nashville, Montreal and the New York Rangers.

The fall of the Northwest

The Northwest Division of the NHL has taken ho-hum to a new level.  Though all five teams have been playing .500 or better (before Edmonton went down in defeat on Wednesday), none of the teams qualify as world beaters right now.  With a few teams adding players at the deadline, perhaps we will see a little more spice from the group the rest of the way.

Eastern Conference playoff push

While the Western Conference playoff squads are all but decided already, postseason positions in the Eastern Conference are still very much up in the air.  Only Washington and Philadelphia are out of it, with Buffalo, New Jersey and Tampa Bay the only sure locks to be skating come playoff time.

A whopper of a deadline

Unlike last week's trade deadline in the NBA, Tuesday's drop-dead date in the NHL saw a flurry of big deals.  Included were Bill Guerin going from St. Louis to San Jose, Gary Roberts moving from Florida to Pittsburgh and the Panthers also shipping todd Bertuzzi to Detroit.  But none was more shocking than Edmonton packing Ryan Smyth off to the Islanders.

Trade deadline looms large

Here’s hoping this week’s NHL trade deadline has a little more life to it than the coma-inducing NBA deadline last week. Considering the number of NBA deals that were supposed to happen but never came to pass, one big move in the NHL would more than top the basketball slumber last week.

Clash of Conference Contenders

The weekend's skate card includes a couple of crucial contests with the Ottawa Senators host the Buffalo Sabres and the Detroit Red Wings visit the Nashville Predators.  Buffalo's big lead makes their clash with Ottawa a little less critical for the Sabres.  But Nashville's recent slide means their match with the Wings could be huge.

Sabres buffaloed by injury

No team has been hit harder by injuries this season than Buffalo.  Wingers Maxim Afinogenov and Ales Kotalik have recently been added to the list that includes Paul Gaustad, Jiri Novotny, Jaroslav Spacek, and Tim Connolly.  But thanks to a strong 10-0 start, plus the contribution by some youngsters thrust into the spotlight, the Sabres remain atop the Eastern Conference.

Sophomore shooters, sophomore slumps

Some of last year's top rookies in the NHL have not fallen victim to the dreaded sophomore slump.  Sidney Crosby and Alexander Ovechkin haven't missed a step and are on paces to exceed their 2005-06 totals, if they haven't already.  But for others, the sophomore slump is very real.

Stars acquire Nagy as deadline looms

The National Hockey League’s trade deadline isn’t until February 27, but the Dallas Stars and the Calgary Flames have already added some impact players to their rosters.  Currently sixth and seventh in the Western Conference race, will it be enough to ensure their postseason hopes and what effect will the deals have on more trades?

Thrashers have to hunt for 'D'

The Atlanta Thrashers lead the Southeast Division of the Eastern Conference with a solid 29-18-8 record, doing so despite allowing more goals than they've scored on the season.  And that lack of defense is going to have to be addressed, possibly through trade, if the Thrashers are finally going to break the postseason barrier for the first time in franchise history.

The profitable losers

Despite their dismal rankings in the NHL standings, several of the league's poor performers have been turning a profit at the window.  Florida, St. Louis, Chicago, Los Angeles and Washington are among the teams paying off for bettors, and with the tight races in both conferences, they could even pay off eventually for their fans.

Forsberg, Bertuzzi part of trade rumors

An earlier trade deadline (Feb 27) than usual and closes races in both conferences will play a role in this year's trading between National Hockey League playoff hopefuls.  Several teams on the postseason bubble will have some tough decisions to make in the next couple of weeks, and it looks like it could be a strong sellers market this time around.

NHL’s All-Star Game should be a real shootout

The NHL holds its All-Star Game for the first time in two years.  The game will feature the youngest player ever voted into the game by the fans, Sidney Crosby, and the unveiling of a new uniform style that, like this clash, was two years in the making.  The puck drops at the American Airlines Center in Dallas at 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday.

Battle for the basement

The Anaheim Ducks, Nashville Predators, and Buffalo Sabres are currently battling for the best overall record in the National Hockey League. But what those teams that are competing for last place overall?  The Philadelphia Flyers are running away with the title of worst this season on ice right now, but a few others could challenge them eventually.

NHL All-Star Starters Announced

Curtain rising on the Wizard of Croz

While most of the world’s best teenage hockey players are overseas competing in the World Junior Championships this week, one of them remains stateside where he sits atop the NHL’s scoring race. It’s hard to believe that Sidney Crosby is not yet 20 years old, but his Wayne Gretzky impression is getting more convincing each and every day.

Puckin' around for the holidays

Just like everyone else, the NHL reflects on itself during the holidays and makes New Year's resolutions as they look to improve the inner self for the coming year.  Unfortunately, like everyone else, most of the resolutions are forgotten before we ever reach February.

Flyers down in the dumps

These are tough times for Philly phans right now.  Except for a recent surprising surge by the McNabb-less Eagles, there's little to cheer in the City of Brotherly Love.  With so little holiday joy among Philadelphia's hockey and hoops teams, it's easy to understand why Santa Claus would get booed.

Panthers playing like pussycats

Four NHL head coaches have been given their pink slips so far during the current NHL season as Ken Hitchcock, Gerard Gallant, Trent Yawney, and Mike Kitchen have all been relieved of their duties on the bench. Could Jacques Martin of the Florida Panthers be next on the list?
