Days after Ilya Kovalchuck's approved deal for $100 over 15 years was announced, NHL oddsmakers are looking towards the new season.  There have been some interesting transfers that could impact oddsmakers and spread in the new 2010-2011 NHL season.  The schedule could reveal some interesting matchups when these transfers are taken into consideration.

NHL Season Starts SoonChicago Blackhawks

Bookmaker has Chicago as a favorite (-152) to win the Central over the Red Wings (+150), though they are listed as third on the favorites list to win the Stanley Cup (+746) at Pinnacle Sports.  Hockey handicappers have mixed feelings for the Blackhawks, due to their young nucleus and changes over the offseason.

Trading away Dustin Byfuglien will likely prove tough for the Hawks.  Add Ladd, Eager, Sopel, and the loss of Antti Niemi, and you have quite a change.  It will be interesting to see how Marty Turco and company deal with the pressure of being the champs.  The young nucleus may have some problems with the loss of key role players, opening some upset picks for odds in the season.

Solid Additions

Speaking of Antti Niemi, the Sharks have a new combination behind goal.  Niemi and Antero Niittymaki make up the Sharks' goaltending unit after losing Evgeni Nabokov.  The clutch play from the Finn against the Blackhawks was all the Sharks needed to see the sign him, which could provide some strength behind net.  You can find NHL Odds on San Jose and Los Angeles (+100 for both) to battle for the Pacific.

The New York Rangers have strengthened their team with winger Alexander Frolov to a one-year deal.  They are still looking to re-sign Marc Staal in order to move forward, along with talented goaltender Henrik Lundqvist.  Will that give them enough to push through and surprise NHL odds makers?

Don't underestimate the Detroit Red Wings this season.  After signing Mike Modano and grabbing Ilari Filppula and Jiri Hudler from overseas, they have a unique blend of veterans and youngsters to compete.  They are always dangerous in the playoffs and should do well this upcoming season.  Perhaps they can make for some interesting NHL odds this upcoming hockey season.

Looking Ahead

Some free agents could still be interesting additions to a number of NHL teams.  Players like Eric Belanger and Jose Theodore, along with others, could impact the NHL season for teams.

It remains to be seen which transfers will make the most impact this upcoming season.  Perhaps the favorites will thrive next season, with teams like the Washington Capitals (+621 to win it all at Pinnacle Sports) looking for their first Stanley Cup, or the talented Pittsburgh Penguins (+581) will established talent with Alex Ovechkin and Sidney Crosby

Of course these transfers are just a few that represent the busy offseason for the NHL.  Which teams do you see making a run from their offseason activities?  Will a team like the Blackhawks manage after losing key players, or will teams will notable offseasons like the Sharks and Red Wings do some damage?
