A Group B opener sees Holland take on Denmark. Here's who we
think will grab the three crucial points.
In the eyes of betting odds makers, the Dutch side is at -190 to get
a victory, while the Danes are listed at +600. A draw meanwhile is at +300 on
the soccer odds board.
There's no question this Holland team is a top favorite in
this competition. They're listed at +700 to outright win Euro 2012,
putting them in third behind Spain and Germany in that respect.
Let's delve deeper into the personnel on both sides of this
Holland has three solid goalkeepers, starting with Maarten
Stekelenburg who plays for Roma. The other two ply their trade in the
Premiership, Newcastle's Tim Krul and Swansea City's Michel Vorm.
The defensive line has Gregory van der Wiel and John
Heitinga among others, but midfield and attack is where this team really shines
Starting more defensively we should see captain Mark van
Bommel and Nigel De Jong in front of the back line. Then comes the dangerous
attacking men such as Wesley Sneijder, Arjen Robben and Rafael van der Vaart.
But we'll save the best for last and that's Robin van
Persie, who absolutely tore up the English Premier League for Arsenal this past
Denmark will be an interesting team to watch, especially as
they'll look to spoil the party for the rest of the Group of Death.
There are some familiar names here too, including Liverpool
defender Daniel Agger, upcoming star Christian Eriksen and forward Nicklas
Bendtner. Bendtner will be the target man and the Danes' hopes may very well
rest on his shoulders.
As for our soccer picks for Saturday's group clash, how can
we go against the high-flying Dutch here?
The only possible question marks on this team are in the
back. There are better goalies around in the competition, and Holland's defense
isn't nearly as good as the rest of their squad either.
Luckily, the Dutch are known for strong defensive midfield
play, as De Jong and van Bommel are both excellent at disrupting attacks.
They'll be counted on to be the brick wall they've proven to be in the past.
Expect goals and a Holland victory
Further up the pitch is where we'll see the true quality
that Holland possesses.
Sneijder may have struggled a little more this past term for
Inter, but he's still one of the world's finest talents when he's on his game.
Robben can score goals from anywhere with that lethal left foot of his, while
van Persie and Klaas Jan-Huntelaar both had fantastic scoring records for their
The Danes definitely have players that can put the ball in
the back of the net as well, starting with Bendtner. He has 18 goals in 48
national team appearances, a solid return considering Denmark hasn't been one
of the top tier teams on the international stage.
Watch out for Eriksen too, whose play for Ajax has garnered
a lot of interest from some even bigger clubs. Don't be surprised to see him
donning a new kit come August, especially if he has a great Euro 2012 campaign.
Let's get to the pick
The value on Holland (-190) isn't too off-putting for this
game, but perhaps we'd be better off to recommend a play on the OVER 2.5 goals.
Instead of opting for a more defensive formation, the Danes have adapted the
ever-popular 4-2-3-1 look and that could open them up to leaking goals,
especially against a strong Holland team.
Then, we all know these Dutch fellows can score.
