Federer and Nadal look to move on to the semis - but does
the field offer some interesting sleepers?
As the Women's
Quarterfinals is underway, the US Open continues to heat up.
3 Novak Djokovic (-365)
v 17 Gael Monfils (+295) - Get the line with Bookmaker
These two made relatively quick work of their competition in
the previous round. Djokovic beat 19
Mardy Fish 6-3, 6-4, 6-1 with an impressive 30 winners. Monfils' 14 aces carried him past Richard
Gasquet, 6-4, 7-5, 7-5.
Djokovic looks to improve upon his unblemished 4-0 record
against the Frenchman Monfils. The
latest 2 matches were played on hard surfaces, where Djokovic won in 3 sets on
each occasion. Sportsbooks clearly put
Djokovic to win this match, though Monfil may develop some opportunities in
this match.
2 Roger Federer
(-373) v 5 Robin Soderling (+333) - 5Dimes Odds
Dropping the 1st set, Soderling beat 21 Albert
Montanes in 3 quick (in games and time) sets, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-3. He'll need all 15 aces, and perhaps more, to
contend with Roger Federer, who took care of 13 Jurgen Melzer in 3 sets, 6-3,
7-6 (4), 6-3. Soderling and Federer won
85% and 77% on their 1st serves, respectively, which will be
interesting to see in this ATP tennis matchup.
12-1 is the eye-opening record Federer has against
Soderling. Notably Soderling took the
lone victory in their latest match in 2010, on clay in France. While this should make for an interesting
match and possible deep-sleeper territory for risky plays, Federer should
thrive under pressure and produce an interesting victory to watch.
1 Rafael Nadal (-1400)
v 8 Fernando Verdasco (+725) - Bet with Bodog
Tuesday was not a good night for Nadal's opponent in the Round
of 16, as Nadal beat 23 Feliciano Lopez 6-3, 6-4, 6-4. Nadal was looking good as he has, where he
has never lost serve in the US Open as of yet.
For Verdasco, 4 hours and 23 minutes elapsed in his 5-set victory over 8
David Ferrer. Verdasco did not look good
early on, dropping the first 2 sets - along with 89 unforced errors.
Nadal is an astounding 10-0 against Verdasco. This includes the 2009 Australian Open
semifinal that lasted over 5 hours. If
Nadal keeps playing this well and the Verdasco that showed up early in the
Ferrer match is there, it won't take that long for Nadal to clinch his
semifinal spot. ATP betting handicappers
may want to look away for a sleeper pick here.
12 Mikhail Youzhny
(-140) v 25 Stanislas Wawrinka (+140) - Check the lines for movement at SBR
Odds
Wawrinka battled 20 Sam Querrey for 4 hours and 28 minutes,
winning in 5 hard-fought sets. Youzhny
defeated Robredo in a less tame match, winning 7-5, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4.
This is the first time Wawrinka has reached a quarterfinal
in a Grand Slam, who was previously 0-5 in the round of 16 at such events. After upsetting 4 Andy Murray, Wawrinka is
2-2 against Youzhny. They met earlier in
this year where Youzhny took the win in Miami,
1-6, 7-6 (5), 7-5. This match will be an
interesting one for odds makers, where Youzhny is the slight favorite.
