Dani Pedrosa
looks ready to win for the second week in a row. Pumped and primed, Pedrosa waited until the
last lap of the hour-long qualifying session to turn up the heat and take the
pole position. Turning in a time of
1:33.9, Pedrosa was the only rider to break the 1:34 barrier.
The Moto GP betting action has Pedrosa at 7/4, while his primary competition, Jorge Lorenzo, is at 11/8.
Lorenzo qualified second, and exhibited blistering speed in both
practice sessions. But Pedrosa's hole-shots
are legendary, and the Repsol Honda
rider appears to have Lorenzo's number.
The pendulum of momentum may have swung Pedrosa's way.
Ducati's Casey Stoner will fill the third slot on
Sunday's starting grid. Twenty minutes
into the qualifying session Stoner was the fastest. Then he crashed in turn four, which sent his
pit crew to work on his front-end. The
front-half of the Ducati chassis continues to act like a petulant child.
After the pit work, Stoner actually improved his time, but
it was still only good enough for third.
The betting odds put Stoner at 6/1.
Valentino Rossi
is on the second row for his home race after qualifying fourth. Rossi has promised his fans a brilliant show,
and might deliver even though not completely healthy. In honor of the race, Rossi will sport a new
helmet displaying a clock on the crown.
Betting action puts Rossi at 4/1. If Rossi gets a clean
start and is on form, he'll more than likely be on the podium. As Ben
Spies demonstrated at Indy, the hometown factor amplifies desire and
talent. And Rossi has plenty of talent
and tons of emotion. Don't count 'The
Doctor' out until it's all over.
Speaking of Ben Spies, the Monster Yamaha rider will be hoping for a great start from his
fifth place position on the grid. The
bet makers have Spies at 25/1, which
doesn't bode well for the satellite-team rider.
But Spies has been surprising everyone all season long, pushing his
machine to perform beyond its limits.
Randy de Puniet
surprised by qualifying sixth followed by Colin
Edwards and Andrea Dovizioso. Realistically, de Puniet and Edwards are not
contenders. Edwards has struggled all
season on the second Monster Yamaha, and de Puniet is still recovering from a
horrific crash.
Dovizioso should
move up, if he keeps his Repsol Honda
on the edge rather than riding over the edge.
Betting action has 'Dovi' at 16/1.
Prior to the race, betting action favors Lorenzo. But circumstances and emotion lean toward
Pedrosa. Rossi will be racing with
heart, while Stoner will be hoping the Ducati's front-end doesn't forsake
him. And all the riders will be
tiptoeing around turn four, which is a bike-eater.
Place your bets.
Then sit back and watch the furious racing at the San Marino Moto
GP.
